You appear to have extensive knowledge of Jefferson as evidenced by your pertinent and incisive quotation selections. I have found them to be very thought provoking. Thank you.

I doubt Jefferson would even recognize the social welfare state that his republic has become.

I posted this in another section, but it fits here as well. Notice how Father Jefferson says "THIS is the sum of good government."

"Still one thing more, fellow-citizens -- a wise and frugal government which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government....."

I am a student classified as a junior at Tennessee State University. I go there financed by government assistance. I am a Political Science major. Thomas Jefferson was one of the greatest presidents. I am sad to see that his love for Sally Hemings was fraught with discrimination and misery. I am sad to see what slaves have endured over their era. WIth minimum wages still low, government scandals rampant and social disease predominant, is there really much difference then, as there is right now? Hmm. There are great advances in technology, but very little in government. Thank you for paying your taxes so that I could go to a black university and experience what I am experiencing. We are getting ready to take final exams this week. We have to write an essay on the professional conflicts between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson and how do they correlate? Thanks for the blog. Later!

A very satisfied student,

Kelly L. Louis
