On March 28, 1811, Thomas Jefferson wrote to William Duane from Monticello:

“The last hope of human liberty in this world rests on us. We ought, for so dear a stake, to sacrifice every attachment & every enmity.”

    I found it a very fascinating quote from an extremely complicated person. As a strict constitutionalist who believed in a weak central power and executive branch. While president he made decisions outside the constitution, the Louisiana Purchase, the Barbary War sending ships over then having Congress act.
