In recent days, Iraq has become even more unstable than usual as members of different political factions have attacked and killed each other and committed other crimes, such as the kidnapping of dozens of people at a Baghdad higher education office on Tuesday, November 14. As the Iraqis try to form a new government, the violence continues unabated. Thomas Jefferson’s words to Francois D’Ivernois in 1795 seem to sum up the situation:
“It is unfortunate that the efforts of mankind to recover the freedom of which they have been so long deprived, will be accompanied with violence, with errors, and even with crimes. But while we weep over the means, we must pray for the end.”
